SELECTION PROCEDURE
The selection onto the Arctic Winter Games Gymnastics Team is a prestigious honour that only a handful of athletes are recognized with every two years. To ensure the best possible performance at Arctic Games, and to provide a transparent decision making process, YGA has developed this policy. It should be used in conjunction with the sport specific criteria set out by the Arctic Winter Games committee as well as Sport Yukon which can be found in the Arctic Winter Games Technical Regulations.
1. Arctic Trials
There is only one team selection event and that is Arctic Trials. Candidates seeking selection onto the Arctic Games team should complete all sections of the application form and return it along with the appropriate payment to YGA prior to the forms due date. The due date will be published on the form. No forms will be accepted after the closing date.
The gymnast must compete on all four events at the Trials to be eligible for the Team. All routines will be judged on Level 3 requirements and based upon this; the top four highest ranked gymnasts will be selected. In the event of a tie, the following tie breaking rule s will apply:
- The gymnast with the highest individual event score receives the tied place.
- If the gymnasts are still tied, the gymnast with the second highest individual score receives the tied place.
- If the gymnasts are still tied, the gymnast with the third highest individual score receives the tied place.
- If still tied, then a flip of the coin in the presence of both coaches will break the tie.
All selected Gymnasts and Coaches are required to attend the scheduled competition prior to Arctic Games.
2. Illness or Injury
Following selection, in the event of there being a doubt over the ability of a gymnast to compete to the best of her ability due to an injury or illness, the following procedure will be adhered to:
- The gymnast will be referred to YGA’s designated medical officer to undergo a medical examination to determine her fitness to participate, which at this stage will be determined based on an assessment of whether or not the injury and/or illness is such that the gymnast is physically unable to compete or is at risk of causing medical harm to herself, or endangering other competitors, officials or spectators.
- If the gymnast passes the medical examination carried out but the medical officer and/or YGA have concerns over whether or not the gymnast is able to compete to the best of her ability due to the underlying injury or illness, the gymnast will be required to undertake YGA’s designated “Fitness Test”.
- The Fitness Test will require the gymnast to perform routine(s) to a minimum of 3 tenths of start value or final score, from the Trials.
3. Removal
A gymnast may be removed from the Arctic Winter Games Team or from any stage of the selection process in the event that injury or illness would inhibit performance at that event. Verification of injury or illness will be made by YGA approved medical personnel. All procedures in respect of confidentiality will be in accordance with the YGA’s Gymnast Agreement’, signed by the gymnast.
A gymnast or coach may be removed from the Arctic Winter Games Team in the event of non-compliance in training, a breach of responsibility to the team, a violation of the ‘Gymnast Agreement’, or rules of membership.
The removal of a coach or gymnast will be in compliance with YGA procedures and any decision will be subject to review through the YGA Appeals Process.
4. Reserves
The selection of reserves to replace a gymnast or coach who has been removed from the Arctic Winter Games Team will be at the discretion of the Technical Director and must be justified in writing and approved by the YGA board.
5. Coach / Chaperone Selection
The coach / chaperone will be selected by the Technical Director based upon the following criteria:
- The Team’s needs.
- The ability to lead, organize and control under high responsibility and stress situations.
- Competition experience and performance.
- Current NCCP qualifications.
- Attendance at all required meetings, training camps and events.
The best of endeavours will be used to secure accreditation for the nominated personal coach(es) who in the opinion of YGA would best contribute to the coaching strategies for the Arctic Games.

The Arctic Winter Games Gymnastic Team will be announced as soon as practicable following the selection trial.
